Wigan midfielder James McCarthy seemed to galvanise the side as Hugo Rodallega opened the scoring in the 58th minute before Elmander’s leveller after 65 minutes.
Bolton began the first half with much of the ball and the direct running from Martin Petrov caused the Wigan defence problems at times.
Just two minutes in and Petrov was given too much space and found Kevin Davies’s head but the England man could only glance his header over.
The early openings were very tentative from Wigan who gave the ball away far too often.
There was a moment of concern for Roberto Martinez though as midfielder James McCarthy was stretchered off with a suspected fractured ankle caused by Fabrice Muamba’s clumsy challenge from behind.
He was replaced by Mohamed Diame who caused a change in system for Wigan which seemed to bring the Latics to life. Rodellega was moved into a wide position and he, together with Charles N’Zogbia began to cause problems for the Bolton defence.
Rodellega had a couple of forceful shots from 20 yards that were both parried by Jaaskenlainen. As Wigan moved into the ascendency although much of the final ball was not good enough.
Second half began in similar fashion to the end of the first half as Wigan remained on top as Rodallega again missing a guilt edged chance after good work from the impressive Diame.

N’Zogbia picked the ball up deep inside his own half and was allowed to run through the centre of the pitch before finding Franco Di Santo, his first time ball went into the path of Rodallega who coolly finished past Jaaskelainen.
Wigan continued to push forward thereafter with Di Santo and Rodallega going close again.
Bolton then scored against the run of play as a Stuart Holden cross is headed across goal by Kevin Davies which lands straight into the path of the grateful Johan Elmander.
The goal didn’t put Wigan off from attacking though as once again Bolton found themselves defending deep. Di Santo went close with a drive from 18 yards as Jaaskelainen dived to stop the ball.
Bolton were having major difficulty in keeping the ball as for the first time in the game Holden couldn’t get on the ball for the Trotters.
Wigan’s pressure should have told in the 79th minute as Rodallega leapt above the two Bolton central defenders and somehow contrived to miss an open goal from just 3 yards out.
Just 30 seconds after Tom Cleverly was brought on to replace Jordi Gomez; the on-loan Manchester United midfielder had a header that just went wide.
Bolton’s defence dropped deeper and deeper as they looked to settle for another point away from home.

The point leaves Bolton in eigth with 12 points.
