Fernandez’s late goal lifts Peru past Jamaica

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP)—Late substitute Jose Carlos Fernandez’s goal in the 85th minute gave Peru a 2-1 victory over Jamaica in an exhibition Tuesday night.

minutes earlier, received Juan Manuel Vargas’ pass deep in the penalty area and beat Jamaica goalkeeper Dwayne Miller with a shot that landed inside the right post. The goal broke a 1-1 tie.
Peru, in its second match under new coach Sergio Markarian, controlled the ball most of the second half but could not capitalize until Fernandez’s go-ahead goal. Markarian guided Peru to a 2-0 victory over Canada on Saturday.

Hernan Rencifo headed a shot which sailed above the crossbar. Vargas nearly converted in the 53rd minute but his shot near the 6-yard box sailed a couple of yards wide off the right post.
Peru benefited from a Jamaica own goal and took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. Jamaica’s Demer Phillips accidentally deflected Juan Manuel Vargas’ shot into the Jamaica goal.
