Weekend Developments From Europe's Top Leagues

Inter slip up and city rivals AC Milan pounce to turn up the heat in the Scudetto race. Elsewhere around Europe this weekend, it seems to have been business as usual for the NFL jerseys
Lionel Messi grabbed a second-half hat-trick as FC Barcelona managed to brush off Valencia 3-0 in the game of the weekend. But Gonzalo Higuain's hat-trick in Real Madrid's 4-1 triumph at Valladolid means the capital club remain top of the tree.

In the race for European spots, Valencia's loss at Barcelona is a blow, but Mallorca failed to capitalise losing 3-0 at Getafe, which allows Sevilla to move into fourth after their 1-1 draw with sixth-placed Deportivo Coruna. Ninth-placed Villarreal might be mounting a challenge after a 2-0 win over bottom-club Xerez.

In the relegation mire, Tenerife's 4-1 win over Espanyol is a big win for the Canary Islands club as they try to climb out of the bottom three, while the 14th-placed Catalans haven't won in four. Neither Santander or Zaragoza could build any significant buffer away from the drop zone after playing out a 0-0 draw.
